Hello all - I hope you have all started printing!

Last year we had a rush on the printers and a mad scramble to get the work out of the computer. I suggest you print what you can and go back and replace what hasn't been completed.

We start at Noon tomorrow and each will have 45 minutes – 15 minute max presentation please.

I don’t have a particular order in mind so it’s up to you to organize. My only advice is those with big drawings – Ronny, Viet and maybe Michael should definitely plan for the hallway. I would like to try for only one pin up change mid way through the reviews so lets have at least 4 up to start.

Someone bring a camera (or even a video camera) and everyone take notes as best you can.

I'm drawing a blank on the name, but dried floral arrangements. Michaels crafts should have them. You can bunch them up and even paint them

the material grid on the outside face of the space is primary to an idea of space-weight then literal lines of the plan; for example:
to make something whole- the grid or joint lines can stagger in pattern, the outside;  its not bound by a orthogonal grid like here, the interior facade , where the orthogonal is bound to the interior structure, the interior organzation

facade is a face but its job to express an interior is beyond the places, it also expresses materiality of itself and or its structure.

what is interesting- is the panels are almost like the way kahn treats interior wood panels;
there are edges or a frame to the panel  at the base, on the left; above on the next level: there is a base then the panels. And if you go around the plan you will see these expressions have a reason, generally to the idea of what kind of place and what is the base of the space... it is more then an understanding of a technology

All,

Please bring a list of drawings with the scale of the drawing and the size of the sheet. Everyone must have a complete site plan and a "complete" model by Friday. Let's do the same pin-up review as last Friday.

Individual notes:

What's needed for Friday.

Jing must have complete elevations and a large scale wall section.

Alina must have identification of building materials and larger scale drawings of the mosque - plans and sections with scale figures. Have you seen the flood in Missouri? Could your project work there?

Amanda must have a COMPLETE set of plans and sections. Good or bad - it really doesn't matter at this point.

Ronny must have plans and sections of the "community center" pool - gym - lockers.

George must have full size detailed plans, sections and elevations that are clear in their material and sustainable strategy.

Carlos must have detailed sections and each plan including the plaza with a clear structural system.

Viet must have complete drawings of the hospital and large scale sections of the resident rooms.

Michael just keep going, but concentrate on one plan, one section and one elevation so you can determine the level of detail required. The section that shows access under the street into the memorial is most important. Devise a way of showing the upper and lower plans of the site. Perhaps draw at small scale and have a blowup of the lower and street level plan on the same sheet?

Lets all meet at the beginning of studio – 2pm – to discuss the strategy of presentations, schedules and focus of work. Remember we have three weeks left. It’s definitely enough time so long as you focus your efforts and don’t get sidetracked.

Make sure your current drawings are printed and ready to review.

I was considering for the final review that everyone should start with a brief slideshow of their preliminary studies and then move into the final drawings. This may help to keep you more focused as you present your work. I just saw a presentation like this at Kent State and it was effective. Since you already have the books from last semester this shouldn’t be too difficult. Let me know your thoughts.

Site Development 2

This scheme shows a squared-off version of the farmland which does not branch out. The Orange is public circ. and the Yellow shows mainly private.

I tried to move the branched-out land to the center of the development to see how it would come together.

I feel like this scheme shows the weave best so far. The Private circ. is direct while the public has to weave around the developments and land. Below is how it would look in a larger site.

Site Development

I have two strategies I put together as of now and working on a third................

This scheme shows clusters of four housing units being brought together. The pieces sticking out of the site can be turned in order to fit within many different shapes. The circulation paths for the residents are represented in yellow, which means that inhabitants can walk through other courtyards as a shortcut. The orange is public paths and forces people around the clusters.

This scheme shows multiple clusters of four being woven together to form an internal communal space with the land being taken away on the interior space would be moved to the exterior. These clusters within a cluster would contain 16 families.

We will not have studio today, but I expect you to use the time productively. On Friday - new drawings - plans and sections that respond to the comments at the review.

I think everyone is ready to start the final presentation. Its important to start outlining what you will need and when you will do it. There is not much time left, but its plenty of time if you make commitment to the work and make decisions now.

Its up to you now. I need to see determined drawings and models and need them asap.

I'll be around school today and will stop in the studio at 2 and again around 6.

All,

I think everyone is making good progress, however, I took a look at where the thesis studio was last year at this time and you all have some catching up to do. I'm glad we are having the review next week as it will give everyone the impetus to get complete set of thoughts out on the wall. For Friday let’s prepare a strategy and “assign” what is due for everyone. Most important is to have a complete “concept” model and then a set of drawings that outline all aspects of the project – site plan, floor plans, sections and 3d-view. I am certain we are all going to make it and now’s the time to really push the ideas forward. Some updates to the blog would be nice also.

WORK IN PROGRESS

I have began a test model (scale 1: 400) which I feel is the one I should stick to for the final model as I tried other ones that seemed too big or too small to work on.

Dimensions of the model at this scale are around 4’ 6” by 4’ 8 which is still pretty big to carry to school regularly so I really don’t know what to do, for now I’ll try to document as much progress as I can and point out areas that I feel need to get fix or more work.

1. One problem that I see right away is that the soil is not as dramatic as I wanted, in fact it still looks very plain with the contours since they are only going one story height , this is the same problem at the area for public viewing. For this reason I think I should go back to the original idea of having the 1^st parking area at grade so that the soil can reach up to two stories high, only problem would be how to bring people from outside parking to stadium, but that can be solved with stairs. Then the pedestrian entrances would go back to be ramps that lead you in.

2. I had the chance to speak to prof. Friedman on Friday and I asked him for advice on the problem I have with the loads of the upper tiers, his suggestion was to spread out the structure a bit more so that each tier gets columns in the middle of them, his commet makes sense but, I kinda want to find an easier solution since moving the structure will interfere with the ramping system that’s already working properly. Im think about cross bracing them ….. but we’ll see

3. After these are solved I think I should move to the roof structure and make it one with the structure of the ramps. Designing these would take some time as they’ll be behaving differently depending on what quadrant they are .
