Thesis Statement

Thank you very much for allowing me to propose architectural services for the new mix-used development for the young educated adults who just graduate from colleges, at the corner lot between Nanhai Ave and West Nangui Road, which located in the center of the Foshan urban area. I am excited and privileged to be noticed that the Foshan City government is going to redefine the city structure and emphasize the cultural and social influences based on the economical concerns and historical experience.

China has been the fastest developed country in the world since 1949. As our understanding of the present situation of China, new generations are sharing huge chances to get a better life and being success based on the increasing urbanization and the developing economy. Unfortunately, while they are enjoying the benefits of the fast city growth, they also need to face the disadvantage of it. The destruction of the old living style in suburban area and the concentration of the goods and services in the cities cause the young people to move from their small hometown into the cities. Furthermore, the living costs in the cities are so high that the beginners cannot afford themselves with their salaries. Even though the most of the new generations have high education, getting a place for them to settle down, both temporary and contemporary, is still a mission impossible. Because of the financial issues, the young adults who grow up in the cities are unable to move out their parents’ apartments and truly get independency and freedom whereas the migrants are shelved themselves into tiny cubical rooms which they have to share the kitchen and bathroom with 5-10 other people in terrific environment.

As an architect, I have the responsibility and obligation to make our city a better place to live, work and entertain. I believe by providing minimum but sustainable, transformable and adaptable living and working opportunities for the young educated adults, who just graduated from colleges or move into the city recently, the city is going to collect and exploit the creative and activate energy from them. While the young adults have the chances to discover their potential and identity through the complex performance, new/better life style/orders may be introduced through the changing needs of practical life in the new educated generations, and later on spread out to the rest of the community by the communication between the different generations. To ease off the financial limitation for the young people, the complex is going to share a series of collective services combined with the utmost respect for the individual who is entitled to his/her own live-in unit. In addition for the fund rising to properly run the complex, the public functions in this development will also serve to the community so people can spend money on the services. In order to get financial support from the government, the complex includes many public gathering points such as parks and plazas.
